Monastery Ostrog and Podgorica

Miraculous monastery Ostrog and the city of Podgorica

Where the miraculous meets the urban.

The Trip to the Ostrog

A bus trip to Mount Ostrog, where the miraculous monastery is located, built right in the rock at an altitude of 840 meters above sea level.
The trip to the monastery goes along Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans – a lake of unique beauty.

The Ostrog Monastery

The monastery was founded by the Metropolitan Bishop of Herzegovina, Vasil, in the 17th century. There, Vasily died in 1671, and a few years later, he was canonised and declared a saint. His body rests in the tomb of the cave dedicated to the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple.

A Little More

The monastery acquired its present appearance in 1923-1926 after a fire that destroyed the main part of the complex. Fortunately, the two small churches of the cave were not damaged, and they are of great value to the entire monument. The frescoes in the View Church were made towards the end of the 17th century.

The Holy Cross Church

Another church dedicated to the Holy Cross is located within a cave on the upper level of the Monastery. It was painted by the master Radul, who skillfully coped with the natural forms of the cave, placing the frescoes directly on the surface of the rock and the southern wall. Around the church, there are monastic cloisters; together with the church itself and the beautiful landscape around, this monument is a pleasant place to stay.
