Risan

Tucked away at the innermost corner of the Bay of Kotor, Risan is one of the oldest settlements on the Montenegrin coast, rich in both history and quiet Mediterranean charm. Once known as Rhizon, it was an important Illyrian stronghold and later flourished under Roman rule, leaving behind remarkable traces of its past.

Among its most valuable historical treasures are the well-preserved Roman mosaics, dating back to the 2nd century AD, with the famous depiction of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep — one of the rarest motifs of its kind in the region. These mosaics stand as a testament to Risan’s significance during antiquity and offer visitors a glimpse into the refined lifestyle of its former inhabitants.

Today, Risan attracts travelers seeking a more peaceful and authentic experience of the Adriatic coast.

Surrounded by steep mountains and crystal-clear waters, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Its calm atmosphere, scenic waterfront, and proximity to the UNESCO-protected Bay of Kotor make it an ideal destination for those looking to explore Montenegro beyond the more crowded tourist hotspots.
