The village of the famous film director Emir Kusturica is located 3.5 hours from Belgrade near the Serbian-Bosnian border. The car slowly rises along an almost steep slope, and the eye offers an amazing view of the local surroundings of Mount Mokra Gora. You can admire the beautiful view and enjoy the clean mountain air. Similar landscapes can be seen in many Emir Kusturica films. These are the mountains covered with dark forests, scattered in a lively disorder, and here and there are houses.
Mokra Gora is truly one of the most intriguing places in the mysterious mountain of Serbia. The beauty of the unique nature of Mokra Gora can not leave any tourist indifferent who has set foot on these lands. Here, the poets and writers of medieval Serbia wrote their works, but even toda,y Mokra Gora inspires the most talented people of our time.
"New House" of Kusturica
It was here, on Mokra Gore, at one of the stations of the narrow-gauge railway, which once connected the capitals of Serbia (Belgrade) and Bosnia (Sarajevo), the famous film director Emir Kusturica built his village Küstendorf. Emir Kusturica, one of the most talented directors of our time, became the winner of the Philip Rotier Award for this original and extraordinary architectural project of the village. Kusturica was fascinated by the area of Mokra Horus while filming the filming of the film “Life as a miracle”, which took place in the vicinity of a picturesque village of the same name – Mocra Gora. The natural landscape of Mokra Mountain was the best suited for the unique idea of the great director. The village was inaugurated on September 25, 2004, the day of the premiere of the film “Life as a Miracle” filmed here.
Shargansk Osmica
The railway line, one of the stations of which is the village of Küstendorf, in the past connected Belgrade with Mokra Gora. It was built in the early 1900’s, at that time the road was a politically and economically important state object. This road is narrow-gauge and it is called “Sharganska Osmica”, as in the plan it has the shape of an eight. If you look at it from the top of the Mokra Mountain, you will immediately understand where the name came from. The construction of the railway was started by the Austrians in 1921, and completed in 1924. The train track was put into operation in 1925 and connected two cities: Užice in Serbia and Visegrad in Bosnia. After 49 years of uninterrupted operation in 1974, the road ceased to function and was dismantled until in 1999 a group of enthusiasts began to recover, in fact, the most picturesque part of it. And now this track provides the best views of the mountain landscape of Serbia. It has a length of 13.5 km and the height difference that the train overcomes, passing from the foot of the mountain almost to its peak, is 300 m.
