Tara and Racha Monastery
Tara National Park
The Tara National Park occupies most of the territory of Mount Tara, which is located on the border of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, in one of the gyrus of the Drina River. The park was established in 1981. Its area is 19.200 hectares. The territory of the national park, Lake Zaovina and the nature park "Shargan - Mokra Gora", form the backbone of the future biosphere reserve "Drina".
Tara is a small plateau at a height of 1000-1200 m, above which rise rare peaks with a height of 1400 to 1600 m, divided into areas of deep river valleys. In addition to the canyon of Drina, composed of limestone, with a height of more than 1000 m, with its beauty and wild nature, the canyons of the Racha, Brusnitsa and Derventa rivers also stand out. The highlight of this edge are the waterfalls of Velika-Skavatsk and Mali-Skokavac on the Rzav River.
Tara is especially famous for the violent, dense, coniferous forests, for which it was assigned the epithet of the most wooded mountain in Serbia and Europe. Of the more than 1000 species of plants that live here, about 20 are endemic, including the queen of all endemic Europeans is a Serbian spruce (or el Pancic, a Serb. Panchicheva Omrice). Serbian spruce is a relic of the tertiary period and the Balkan endemic, which survived the long ice age in very few areas located in the middle of the Drina River.
The local climate contributes to the treatment of asthmatic bronchitis, anemia and the strengthening of immunity. At the disposal of tourists comfortable pedestrian paths (10 km), for athletes - trim-track (16 km), a football ground, open areas for various game sports and other facilities. At an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level there are ski slopes with two cable cars - one for children and beginners, 150 m long, the second - for adults and experienced skiers, 450 m long.
